The launch event took place October 29, 2023 at the Guild Theater in Menlo Park and featured performances by rising young artists from Oakland School for the Arts, GLIDE Memorial Church + SFJAZZ, San Francisco Community Music Center, ELM (Enriching Lives Through Music) and Blue Bear School of Music. Featured guests included music legend and Elevate Oakland co-founder Sheila E., and 49er legend and NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott. The hosts for the night were Sterling James and Tennessee Mowry.
Queen of Percussion, musical icon, co-founder of Elevate Oakland and the first female solo percussionist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Sheila E. has devoted much of her time sharing her gifts as a musician, producer, writer and humanitarian with others.
Four-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall-of-Famer, Lott’s accomplishments beyond the football field -- as a humanitarian, social entrepreneur, activist and founder of All Stars Helping Kids -- have exceeded his superb career as one of the most distinguished and identifiable defensive players in NFL history.
A true Bay Area native, Sterling James first hit the air in 1985 at her high school radio station and never looked back. Your “Bay Baby”, as her fans and family affectionately call her, James got her BA in Radio and Television from San Francisco State University and launched a thriving career as a radio DJ (KSOL, Alice@97.3 and KBLX), event host and TV personality. When not behind the mic, James is firmly rooted in her hometown of Berkeley with her husband, Bay Area Percussionist Adrian Isabell and their daughter, “Baby Girl”.
Tennessee Mowrey is a bona fide Blue Bear “lifer.” Born and raised in the Bay Area, he first joined the school in a summer camp in 2005 at the age of 13, and returned to teach at Blue Bear after receiving his degree in music from Wesleyan University. He now runs the beloved Little Bears and teen band programs. In his off time, he plays in two bands that regularly gig around the Bay (just ask him about his recently converted garage music studio!).
San Francisco Community Music Center will feature “Los Jefes”, a high school band that plays Latin Jazz and Salsa, and includes several students the Center’s Young Musicians Program. They have been a band for two years and have rebuilt the group this summer 2023 after some members left for college. Current members include Mateo SIguenza, Rogelio Murillo, Santiago Winton, D'antonio Perry and Zeia Bachrach.
Oakland School for the Arts (OSA) is proud to present a collaborative showcase of music from students in our Vocal Music and Instrumental Music arts pathways. OSA is a public charter performing arts middle and high school located in downtown Oakland above the historic Fox Theatre.
GLIDE Memorial Church will be represented by a jazz band led by Miles Turk — and also feature a collaboration with SFJAZZ Allstars Skylar Tang and Vincent Mc’Laughlin.
Blue Bear School of Music will feature rock band Satana, and an emcee from its DJ program.
ELM (Enriching Lives Through Music) is a classical music school modeled after Venezuela’s training program El Sistema, and they will feature their 40 person ELM Youth Orchestra.
